What keeps you from breathing deeply, fully and regularly?

While practicing deep breathing and remembering to breathe deeply, I found it useful to identify the factors that discourage me from breathing deeply, fully and regularly. Everyone is different, but here is my list. I notice new things every day:

  • When I am driving in traffic I tend to want to hold my breath thinking that maybe that would speed things up.
  • When I am waiting for a slow Web page to open or a file to download.
  • When I am cold.
  • When I am in pain.
  • When I am driving too close to the car in front of me.
  • When I am anticipating negative events.
  • When I am emotionally distressed.
  • When I am hearing loud or disturbing noises.
  • Bad smells. When I am at work and someone is cooking something in the microwave that doesn't smell nice, I tend to breathe shallowly so trying to avoid the bad smell.

Breath of fire helps me make sure I breathe at a time of discomfort or pain.
