How I use Google as an English-Arabic dictionary

Through learned skills, intuition and common sense, you can do wonders with Google. I use it when I get writer's block to finish thoughts and sentences. I use it for research, of course. I also use it as an English-Arabic dictionary, especially for terms and phrases that cannot be found in regular dictionaries because they are new or specialized.

I often get a wide variety of results that I can choose from.

This is what I do: I go to an Arabized Google page such as http://www.google.ae/

I enter the English term and, to force the search results to be Arabic pages, I enter an Arabic word that is likely to be found in those pages. Commonly used words such as من or في will be excluded because they are too common; therefore, you have to find a unique word that you think is likely to appear in the Arabic Web page that you are looking for. If I don't find good results, I try another Arabic word.

I just browse through the snippets of the search results. I often have to go deeper into the results because Google's algorithm displays English only results even though I entered an Arabic word. I can restrict it to Arabic results by choosing نصيحة: بحث عن النتائج باللغة العربية فقط . But this might restrict your results because some Arabic pages might not be labled as Arabic.

Google as an Arabic-English dictionary

I also use Google to translate an Arabic term into English. I recently tried to look up a translation for the Arabic term التلاحق الثقافي but couldn't find it in Arabic-English dictionaries.

So I googled the term and added the English word "cultures".
