Why it's important to give complements to others and yourself

I recently had a conversation with my sister about giving complements. She mentioned her professor who is a sharp dresser but would still give complements to others who are far less dressed up.

We were wondering if giving complements could be a form of lying or hypocrisy.

I think it is neither. It is truth that we want to start with and build on.

Giving complements sets the energy momentum upwards for growth and improvement. It is finding the positive in any situation and focusing on it.

When we build on our strengths, our weaknesses take care of themselves. Finding the positive in any situation sets in motion the process of attracting change. Whatever we focus upon, increases.

You do not become good by trying to be good, but by finding the goodness that is already within you and allowing that goodness to emerge. Eckhart Tolle

Actually I try to practice this every day: When I see something nice in connection to a person - no matter whether it is a piece of jewelry, a haircut or something kind that they do - I always mention it. I believe that when you hear good things about yourself and your taste, you get encouraged to continue doing what is positive and it builds you up as a person. Actually I have heard the reaction you mentioned: "Why do you give such compliments to that difficult person?" And my answer is: "Because I want to encourage her to develop all that is good". But I never give a compliment unless I am sincere, because lies do not serve a positive purpose. Instead, if we are looking at something as superficial as clothing, there may be someone who is dressed in clothes that don't really suit her. However, the color on the shirt happens to be beautiful and just right for her. Then I will naturally say: "Hey, that's a really beautiful color; it suits you so well!" OK, this may be a small thing, but this is how I for a long time have tried to contribute to the little good things in everyday life... Love your texts!
