As long as you are clean, dressed decently, and have the full intention to pray to your creator, that is what's important!

Having a piece of cloth on your head makes no difference whatsoever. God is greater and bigger than caring about nail polish on your fingernails and a veil on your head.

People take religon too literally. They are too obedient to culture, uncertain hadiths and tradition. Prayer is about spirituality and growth of the soul :)

I was searching on the internet for answers about Islam.

I am a Muslim but I sometimes question what the imams and scholars teach and preach, as they don't have evidence from the Quran or Hadith as proof. While searching, I came across your blog.

First of all, my hat goes off to you for questioning and talking about matters which many conservative Muslim women won't discuss. I think that some Muslim women feel that because some things are "expected" by Muslim society, you should just follow it blindly to conform, and not question what you have been taught (by people) to do.
Also, I think that some people in general look to imams and scholars for advice instead of consulting God's word (the Quran) and what the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) has stated (Hadith).

I really like the way you have presented your argument with regards to the contradictions of observing hijab while praying but not in day-to-day life.
I think all in all we have to understand why we wear hijab. Everything in Islam has its logical reasons.
The reason for wearing hijab around men who are not close relatives is to avoid any type of sexual attractions that may occur. I also want to add one thing- Hijab, from what I understand it, is not only a scarf on the head and covering any flesh that may be exposed. It is also suppressing any bad thoughts and being humble.
I don't know the reason for wearing Hijab while praying, but your blog has prompted me to want to do some research and find the places in the Quran and Hadith which refer to Hijab for women.

God wants you to "pray without ceasing". You can pray anytime, anywhere, no matter what you are wearing. As long as your heart is right, and you are praying with the proper attitude, It is pleasing to Him. When you read the Old Testament, there were many customs that were mere tradition, that God was trying to teach them that those traditions weren't the important thing. The true heart is what is important. The attitude and the way you live your life is important. You are not to do things for other people to see, for their benefit. You are to do things for God. He sees all, knows all, and is everywhere. He knows our true hearts and our every thought. Acts 2:38. Live the right kind of life, the kind that He wants you to lead. He sent his only son to this earth to die for each and every one of us, and He wants each of us to obey his gospel and live with him in heaven for all eternity.

I usually do not cover my head when praying. I feel like a hypocrite when I do because I do not believe in covering my head. I do cover my head when I pray with my husband, because it is our compromise...we pray side-by-side...and he said both side-by-side AND no cover was too much for him at this point in his life...although he does respect when I pray without covering my head when i am NOT in his presence...sigh...I pray without covering my head when I am at my mosque, but not at other mosques...I only know of a handful in the U.S. where it is okay. I hope for the day when we can just pray without the tethers of any outward appearance.

I would be very interested to know if anyone knows of a authentic hadith or clear-cut Quranic passage that requires women to veil their hair during prayer. I am not convinced that the hijab is an Islamic obligation for women, however the fact that women have to veil during prayer is troubling me....if women must veil during prayer, and there is sufficient prove to uphold this belief, then my belief that the hijab is not an islamic obligation for women will probably change....

very interesting view on the issue, although if u choose to look at it form that angle, then u might find your self questioning more and more, because as u mentioned your self, the way of praying or practicing islam in general is a result of several mens interpretation of the holly Quran throughout the last 1000 years, and only God knows what the correct way of for instance clothing during praying actually is. And believe me i have same doubts my self, but the more i analyze or rationalize the more meaningless many of the Islamic or religious rituals appear...i always try to find the peace in my mind by thinking well this my not be the right way, but this is the way i am told is the right one. At the same time i try to not be blind but instead exclude things, which in my opinion are obviously superficial or dictated by human beings and not God...But to do so i need to be 100 % sure of it, and the covering issue is still not that clear for me, but your considerations have brought me one step closer to those 100 % so thanks!

I am a new convert to Islam and have an ocean of questions floating around in my head. Many thoughts and concerns have come to the forefront of my mind recently regarding womens' hijab, praying at home and the appearance that women have more responsibility in controlling a man's eyes and thoughts than they themselves do; which, causes me to feel uncomfortable and unsettled in my heart but urges me to continue self-educating and researching. After reading this blog my choice in Islam and my faith and trust in Allah and what I feel in my heart has strengthened. It is comforting to know that muslim born women and longer practicing women than myself, feel similar regarding this issue. Thank You!

Nicely written, i agree 100%. I feel for anonymous though and understand what you mean. I pray with my clothes on infront of my family and friends to avoid the dangerous outcome. But when i'm alone i don't cover and it feels great, it feels like a completely different connection wit god. May Allah guide us all to the right path.

Wow what a fantastic blog! I have recently been told off for praying as I am - and trying to find a legitimate and trustworthy source of knowledge on this led me to this post.

I have been critised for praying the way I do - but I feel: "I'm at ome, I am sincere, this is me" a brother told me it would be more "humble" to dress up - which didnt make sense - surely being humble is being exactly as you are?

This is most interesting, I too have found myself in this predicament, Everything you say sounds logical and rational to me, however, although deep down I agree with this view, if I was to put it into practise in my home (as I live with my family) id be an outcast, maybe even to the extent of being an apostate in my community. I think I will dress in prayer, how I always dress daily, except just adding a loose headcovering so not to cause conlict with my family and community. Prayer is meant to be easy, as is Islam, but all these rules and regulations make it almost impossible at times. Thank you for this article. Sabrina.
